Sid Ryu, Pediatric Psychiatrist
Starting from intuition,
reaching it through AI.
Across 20 years in the clinic, I met the signals carried in every child's expression. Reaching that intuition through AI and bringing it into everyday life. That is where Emology began.
Emology is the company; SmartDream is its first device.
01 · Why psychiatry
I chose psychiatry,
above all, for my own personal growth.
Many people see psychiatry as a choice made for patients. For me, it began with a more personal question. "Could it help my own mind, my own maturity?" That personal question, in the end, led me to a deeper answer as a physician.
During residency, my first child was born. "How do I become a good father?" followed me every day through long hours, and the fastest path to that answer was pediatric psychiatry. That is how I came to focus on the inner lives of children and adolescents.

02 · The journey
From clinic-room intuition
to a daily-use device. A 20-year path.
Stage 01
2001
Beginning psychiatric practice
I chose pediatric psychiatry as my specialty. It was a choice made first for my own maturation, and the birth of my first child was the decisive trigger that pointed me toward children and adolescents.
Stage 02
2006
Opening the clinic in Gangnam (Sid Ryu Pediatric Psychiatry)
I started outpatient practice for children and adolescents only, building an integrated approach that addressed learning, sleep, and emotion together.
Stage 03
2012
A point where the quality of practice rose
After enough repetition I felt my intuition about each patient deepen. From this point I tried to digitize qualitative clinical data using Excel, but the limits were obvious for the effort. I hit my first wall.
Stage 04
2016
AlphaGo. Maybe AI can do it.
What Excel could not reach in digitizing intuition reignited as a possibility through AI. After hearing colleagues in psychiatry and computer science, I reached the conclusion: this is worth betting a life on.
Stage 05
2020
Founding Emology Inc., a life bet
I founded Emology, a multimodal AI company working with facial expression, voice, and language. The hypothesis at the core: the face tells us the most about the human mind. The company was structured to run technology and clinical practice together.
Stage 06
2023.07
SmartDream, the K-ARS 6-week observational study
We published a single-clinician observational study tracking K-ARS scores of 41 children and adolescents (ages 5–18) over six weeks. It clarified the device's place: a daily adjunct that supports attention while avoiding medication side effects.

03 · The decisive insight
The essence of clinical data
is, in the end, an understanding of the human mind.
Moving past the years of pouring qualitative data into Excel, one thing became clear. The information that tells us the most about the human mind is the face, and the face has to be read as a response to a stimulus.
I see AI that understands facial expression, the Vision Language Model (VLM), as the next inflection point after the LLM era.
“Emology is a company that takes the insight I gained through intuition (what I saw with my eyes) and reaches it through artificial intelligence.”
04 · Why a device, not a drug
A path that protects
children's meals and sleep while supporting attention.
ADHD medication lifts attention quickly, but it presses on appetite and sleep. Yet the most basic developmental task as a child grows independent of parents is precisely the separation of meals and sleep. That medication acts on this core developmental stage was, more than anything, what weighed on me in the clinic.
SmartDream is a non-pharmacological adjunct that gently modulates the nervous system. It does not press on meals or sleep. If anything, it supports sleep, while supporting daytime attention. As a pediatric psychiatrist, this was something I felt I had to make.
At home
A home-care device used without visiting the clinic
Affordable
A lower entry cost than medication or conventional therapy
Pain-free
A gentle current designed to minimize pain and discomfort
05 · From the clinic
Five months of waiting,
and then: "I missed you."
Early in my practice, my very first patient was a kindergartner. He had remarkably high intelligence, at the level of a national first-place finish in a math olympiad, but he cried when things did not go his way and was often pushed around by other children. We started weekly play therapy. For five or six months, he could not even meet my eyes.
One day he sat in the chair, looked at me for the first time, and said "I missed you, doctor." I still remember that moment. We continued through middle school. Years later, that boy returned to me as an undergraduate at Seoul National University`s College of Engineering, working hard to overcome his own social difficulties on his own. As a psychiatrist, that was the deepest fulfillment I have ever felt.
That single experience set SmartDream's direction. We believe a child's self-motivation is, in the end, the destination of all treatment. When parental attachment generates a child's motivation, and SmartDream supports their attention, the child can fully express the potential they already hold.
